Welcome to OakWood Hill Homestead

OakWood Hill Homestead is my effort to teach my fellow "spoonies" how our limitations do not prevent us from becoming more self-sufficient. By working within our capacities, we can build a life we love!

I have lived my life with chronic illness.

I was born with severe urinary and gynecological birth defects leaving me without an ability to bear children. I have faced more surgeries, hospitalizations, medical emergencies and complications than I can count, and certainly more than I care to remember.

Due to my medical issues, I am dependent on medical devices and prescriptions drugs, and will be for the remainder of my life.

However, throughout all of this, I choose to use my experiences to offer compassion, empathy, love and share the lessons I learned on this journey.

Now I know what you're thinking, homesteading requires heavy work and for those living with chronic illness, getting tasks done can sometimes be impossible. Homesteading doesn't have to be hard, there are light tasks that spoonies can do and actually accomplish!

Light homesteading allows people with chronic illness have regular physical activity to improve their overall health and mood. Furthermore, the sense of accomplishment in tasks done in light homesteading is a wonderful feeling and the ability to provide for the family creates a sense of pride that is beyond compare.

Most importantly, light physical activity is known to alleviate pain in chronically ill individuals and can keep depressive symptoms at bay.
